A nine-year-old boy from Pennsylvania has become one of the youngest known high school graduates.

David Balogun, who has a strong interest in science and computer programming, recently received his diploma from Reach Cyber Charter School. He completed his coursework remotely from his home in Bensalem, a suburb of Philadelphia.

His graduation places him among the youngest students to finish high school. According to rankings compiled by Oldest.org, only a handful of individuals have graduated at a younger age.

Among them is Michael Kearney, who holds the Guinness World Record after graduating at six. David also joins a group that includes Pulitzer-prize winning journalist Ronan Farrow, who completed high school at 11.
David has already started looking ahead.
He said he hopes to become an astrophysicist and study black holes and supernovas. Since graduating, he has begun taking courses at Bucks County Community College while continuing to explore future academic options.

His parents, both of whom have advanced degrees, said raising a child with his level of ability has required adjustment. His mother, Ronya, described the challenge of balancing his intellectual curiosity with the reality that he is still nine years old.
His teachers also played a role in his progress.
David said some of his favorite instructors encouraged him to keep moving forward and supported a more flexible approach to learning. One teacher noted that his instruction had to be individualized, while another described him as the kind of student who changes how you think about teaching.
Outside of academics, David’s interests extend beyond the classroom. He is a member of Mensa, is working toward a black belt in martial arts, plays the piano, and participates in sports.

As his family considers next steps, they are weighing what environment would be the right fit.
His father said they are taking their time with the decision, focusing on what makes sense for both his education and his age.
