Kelly Isenberg, of Summerville, said her son Kameron formed a close bond with his bus driver, Charles Frierson, after starting kindergarten in the Berkeley County School District.

What began as a daily bus ride gradually turned into something more.

Frierson first met Kameron on his first day of school. According to his teacher, Stephanie Williams, the two connected almost immediately. Kameron asked if he could spend a few minutes talking with Frierson on the bus, and that interaction became a routine.

At the time, Kameron was having a difficult transition into kindergarten. His mother later shared in a letter to the school district that she began to notice changes in his behavior as the friendship developed.

She described how Frierson consistently went out of his way to support her son. Sometimes it was small gestures, like sharing lunch or bringing ice cream. Other times, it meant showing up outside of school, including attending Kameron’s baseball games on weekends.

Frierson, who has been driving school buses for several years, said the job is about more than transportation. He explained that simple conversations with students, even brief check-ins, can have a lasting impact.

Over time, those small interactions appeared to add up.

Kameron’s teacher said she saw a noticeable shift in his confidence and behavior, adding that he lights up when he sees Frierson. The relationship, she said, encouraged him to try things he had previously struggled with.

Frierson refers to Kameron as “my little buddy,” a reflection of how the connection has grown on both sides.

Even during the summer, the two plan to stay in touch. Kameron has already talked about spending more time with Frierson, including simple plans like getting ice cream together.

For his family, it’s something they’re grateful for, and something they hope continues.
