The friendship between Michelle Obama and George W. Bush has often stood out, largely because of their political differences.

Over the years, the two have been seen sharing light moments at public events, drawing attention for their easy rapport.

According to Jenna Bush Hager, part of that connection comes down to personality. Speaking on Today With Jenna & Friends, she said both her father and Obama share a similar sense of humor, often using self-deprecating jokes.

She described laughter as a kind of “love language” that runs through her family, adding that it may explain why the two get along.

Their interactions have been documented at several high-profile events.

At the 2016 opening of the National Museum of African American History and Culture, they were seen greeting each other warmly. During the funeral of former President George H.W. Bush in 2018, Bush passed Obama a mint while they were seated together, a moment that was widely shared.

Obama later referenced the exchange, noting his sense of humor and awareness in the moment.

Despite representing different administrations and political parties, both have spoken about the friendship in a matter-of-fact way.

Bush has said that some people were surprised by their relationship, pointing to broader political divisions that make such connections seem unusual.

Even so, their interactions have remained consistent.

At public events, they are often seen talking, laughing, or acknowledging each other in small ways.
